What it is
There are many different perspectives from which to answer this question: 'What is the ego?'
Some have been described here.
1. Humans differentiate themselves psychologically from the One Life in order to survive and thrive.
The ego is purely psychological, and can therefore only be discussed among people who have turned their attention within, enough to become aware of it.
Attention can be turned within during any situation. For thousands of years, human beings have been creating and practicing formalised ways of turning the attention within called meditation. There are many different variations.
The ego is the sense of 'I' that is limited in some way. For example: "I am David". Also: "I am David, therefore not Julia."
Why Nonduality is so alien to most people
For something to exist, it must appear to be separate from the One Infinite Whole. The One Infinite Whole has many synonyms, which are often capitalised in formal contexts to show that its meaning is Absolute, instead of relative.
They include:
God
Consciousness
Awareness
Infinity
Oneness
The Universe
Brahman
Ultimate Reality
Whatever believes "I, separate from Infinity, exist" - 'ex-ist' meaning 'to stand outside of' - never truly does, but it can believe that it does. To 'it' ('you'), it seems certain that it exists as a separate entity.
This is because it is within the realm of infinite possibility.
